Respect vs. Love

This post was originally posted on April 16th, 2007.

At my birthday dinner last year, my friend Chris brought up this interesting tidbit: If people had to choose between being loved OR being respected, almost all men would choose to be respected (but unloved) and almost all women would choose to be loved (but not respected). We went around the table, and all our friends fell on those sides. Fascinating. You guys, too?

Flower Classes

Next time I'm in San Francisco, I'd love to go to this flower arranging class*. Anna seems really awesome--and did floral work for Oprah!

* I guess I'm officially a girl.

Soko Cutie.

I usually don't love stream-of-consiousness songs, since they often seem to try too hard to be precious and clever. But this video by Soko (a Paris-based duo) is adorable and touching. The girl is singing about a guy who left her for someone else. How sweet when she sings, "We would have had a boy called Tom, and a girl called Susan, born in Japan." Born in Japan! I love that detail; it's exactly how you fantasize about the future in somewhat obscure detail.

Stina Persson

I heart Stockholm-based Stina Persson's illustrations. Her new website launched today, so check out her dreamy illustrations of women. They have a great feel and an inexplicable authenticity. (Plus, look at that cute bellybutton above!) For more, see her art for Cookie's witty sex column, or check out this lovely art boutique.

Pretty necklace

I don't wear jewelry. I like to keep things very simple, and, also, I don't have any. But I am taken by this branch necklace. What a nice way to welcome in the fall. (via Camilla)

Alice Reads a Book

Photographer Alison Brady has an affectingly spooky exhibit right now at Massimo Audiello. Here's my favorite shot. She looks a little like Alice in Wonderland, post-puberty.

Bling

Carrying on our theme of literal jewelry design, here is a fun gold ring. What's not so fun is the price -- a whopping $380. Luckily for romantic pennypinchers, there is a $10 version as well.

The Fabulous Fifi

Meet Fifi Lapin, a bunny who is inspired by the runway shows. Isn't she fabulous? Visit her blog here, or get a print of her here. On this page, she wears Diane von Furstenberg and the gorgeous Gucci.
