I hate dancing.

Always have, always will. I always get nervous for dance parties and weddings. Are there any other girls out there like me? (Drawing by Megan Whitmarsh)

Baskets

Magazines are slowly but surely taking over my home. I wish I had a woven basket to hold them. Imagine this basket filled with magazines...
Or this...

Say Cheese

This photography by Cig Harvey is so sweet and gentle. I like the 1950's vibe and the feeling that they are each home alone and just relaxing. (via A Little Sussy)

Missing my family...

Some of my family lives in America; but most live in England. My family in England just spent an amazing weekend together in Polruan, the tiny Cornish fishing village where my grandmother lives. My aunt sent the photos today, and they made my heart swell and break at the same time. Looks so lovely -- I wish we all could have been there! It's hard to live so far away from your family sometimes.

Swim Love

We went swimming in the ocean at Coney Island this weekend, and I'm feeling so inspired and refreshed by summer. Thanks to Alex for this lovely photo!

Draw me some wings!

New York artist couple Justin and Christine are geniuses. They've made a collection of paintings of things they want, where each painting costs the same price as the item in it. So their buffalo wings painting costs $12.70, their iPhone painting costs $649.17, one month’s rent is $1056.06, and beer is $7.00 (including tip). Their painting of sleep was free. The most expensive piece—Financial Security—comes in at $1,000,000, hilariously. They’ve sold a bunch already and still want more.....Awesome idea, you two!

Some People Cannot Breathe....

Countdown to Paris: French Clothes

There's something about a vacation that makes you want to reinvent yourself. My mom and I are going to Paris soon, and I keep fantasizing about strolling the streets in French-style trench coats and turtleneck sweaters.

The fall collection of Ulla Johnson (above) would fit the fantasy perfectly! Her clothes look so French and womanly and smart. APC ensembles would also be a nice way to go; see their winter collection here.

(A funny note: I also stumbled upon this post--She seems to have the same idea! Awesome, Vic!)

Third Drawer Down

When I was little, my British grandmother, aunts and mom were really into tea towels. The Third Drawer Down has great modern versions. Look at their great designs.

The Perfect Sideboard

I spotted this 1960's teak sideboard on Bloesem and was immediately taken by its clean lines, beautiful wood and drawers with "bowtie pulls." What a perfect example of midcentury-modern style. It's from a Belgium-based shop, which has lots of cool vintage pieces (such as these and this). Take a look, and thanks, Bloesem...

People and their shoes

For her Shoe Project, Norway-based Ellen Ugelstad photographed people's faces and shoes. It's funny to see who wears what. (P.S. The sweet old man above is 97! Also creepy that the flip-flopped dude here is a nudist.)

Bottled Water=Not Awesome

My main man Alex wrote a great article today about how bottled water is really environmentally unfriendly--think of the plastic of each bottle and the transportation used to get it here from as far away as Fiji. When you think about it, it's really insane and seems so much better to get Nalgene bottles or reuse plastic bottles for weeks at a times. Let's do it, dudes!

The invisible man (and woman)

I've long loved these intriguing photos by Charles Cohen. Last week, New York Magazine used the lower one for an article on married men who sleep with men, thereby leading two separate lives. (New York Mag, why are you so smart?)

This series by Stockholm-based Julia Peirone is similarly cool. The outlined woman is so sweet and somehow vulnerable, like she really wants to be included in the fun. (via iheartphotograph).

Stay-at-home girlfriend

The other morning, I was really sleepy and told Alex that I would like to be his stay-at-home girlfriend.

He asked me what I'd do, so I came up with a to-do list:
* think of party themes
* call him a lot to say hi during the day
* walk around the neighborhood to discover new shops and restaurants
* read lots of magazines so i'd be an interesting conversationalist

As a type-A personality, I'm sure that after a week I would miss my job and Lina and want to go back. But it seemed like a really nice idea when I was sleepy and smoochy in the morning.

P.S. I also love this song, via Swiss Miss.

Gawker does yuppie lists, too!

As you know, we love/hate yuppie comments here on Cup of Jo. Well, this week, media gossip blog Gawker called out Domino magazine for making yuppie comments. After reading Domino, Gawker reports: "Here is the kind of quote we found within. From interior designer David Netto, on his 'signatures': 'Cedric Harman lamps, log baskets, Prouve chairs from Vitra—inevitably, you need one somewhere.' Inevitably. Also, from interior designer Tom Schaerer: 'There’s nothing worse than a dining table with legs at the edge or corners.' Uh. Genocide?"

Right on, Gawks.

Jeans Debate, Part Trois

More from the mom jeans front! They will not die! Back in April, some of you liked these high-waisted beauties, but, in June, everyone frowned upon this long-crotched shape from Berlin.

So, dear readers, what is our feeling on this extremely high-waisted look? On the rack, they seem totally insane, but this Italian cutie pulls them off! Would you be brave enough to wear them, or will these, too, end up in the reject pile?

What do you look like before bed?

Ooh la la.

Ahh, Lina just emailed me this amazing dress by new French clothing line Heimstone (which also happens to have the cutest website ever). Daily Candy says it looks like something Madeline would wear, but I think Amelie would like it, too. Oh, I am in love. Thanks, Leenabean!
