Return from Mexico

Hello, babydolls! Alex and I got back from Tulum, Mexico last night, and it was amazing. White beaches, crystal clear water, snorkeling...now I understand why people take beachy vacations. Alex swam like a little fish for hours every day, and the food -- margaritas, guacamole, fish tacos -- was fresh and spicy and incredible. It was such a relaxing and romantic trip, and I wish we could fly right back. More photos here...

Have a great afternoon, and I look forward to catching up! xo

One more thing before I go...

Congrats to the lucky soul who scored this vintage Mercedes for a cool three grand on eBay. Born in 1979, it's as old as I am but light years more awesome.

Mexico Swims

Tomorrow morning, Alexei and I are flying to Mexico where we'll look like these people. I'm so excited and need a break more than ever. Have a wonderful week, my dear readers!
P.S. Isn't that last dude someone famous?

Best of the Blogs

A few great links from around the web this week...

Remember how we love French clothing line Heimstone? Here's a sneak peek at their new collection.

Check out this inspiring list. Let's all make lists of 30 (or even 100) things to do before we drop dead!

Anyone want to go on a picnic?

Every bedroom needs an adorable polaroid heart..

Jordan had a great idea for a party: Have each guest give two-minute presentations. Sounds sort of business-like, but would really be awesome.

This real-life etsy love story is whirlwind and amazing.

A fun new blog--give her some love!

Krisatomic's as-always beautiful photos, this time from her trip to Switzerland.

Pink is oh-so-pretty.

And the most exciting news online this week is that Alexei is selling his place. We're going to be roommates!

What's a Friday without fancy lingerie?

While it's much too expensive to actually buy (even their legwarmers are $350), Kiki de Montparnasse is nice inspiration for those, um, inspirational moments.

Sartorialist Thursday

The Sartorialist, everyone's favorite street-style photographer, is in New Dehli! Here are some great shots capturing Indian color, energy and even a shave....
And a few New York shots, too. (But seriously, who wears a cape?!)

Dancing Shoes

I like how lots of this season's shoes kind of look like jazz shoes. They look soft, modern and comfy and would look great with shorts or skirts. Makes me want to do jazz hands!

The Return of the Nice Guy

Many guys seem to feel that, in order to get the girl, they need to act cool, silent and stand-off-ish. But here's a secret: Most girls actually prefer NICE guys. I've always gone for friendly, funny, nice guys, not some weird dismissive dude.

We were talking about this the other day, and Alex said that he used to think girls weren't attracted to nice guys, so he'd tried to act mysterious. But years later, he realized that his actual nice personality worked. He said he wished he'd had a Jim-from-the-Office as a role model when he was younger.

Here's to John Krasinski, making guys nicer and girls swoonier all over the world.

Horse Girls

I recently stumbled upon photos of this Brooklyn apartment belonging to Matt Stinchcomb from etsy and his girlfriend Benedikta. I was especially drawn to the photograph, above, by Anne Hall, who has photographed a series of, as she sweetly says, "horses and their girls." This was my favorite:
Isn't it sweet?

Poll: Do you drink milk?

I have something really weird to tell you.....I drink milk. When I order it in coffee shops, people think I’m nuts and never know what to charge me. But milk is so delicious. Do you drink glasses of milk, dear readers? I'm so curious!
P.S. This cocktail looks delicious.

Last week, I stumbled upon these incredibly inspiring fashion photos of a real-life girl named Caitlin. I don't know much about her except that I want her entire wardrobe and her ridiculously cute pink cheeks.

Calling All Photographers...

To all you photography enthusiasts out there: I'd like to invite you to submit a photograph for a book I'm working on....

My Heart Wanders: a collection of subtle hearts in special spaces.

Each photograph must display a tiny heart shape within an interior setting, and the heart shape must be found or made by you. (The heart does not have to be the focus on the photograph.) This book will showcase artists and creatives from all corners of the globe. Filled with inspiring photographs, it will be one of the freshest and most beautiful reference guides for
interior and design lovers worldwide.

Submit photographs for consideration to piabijkerk (at) gmail (dot) com. The deadline for submissions is June 15, 2008. More info here.

Please send in photos, my dears!

Best of the Blogs

Here's a round-up of fun posts from other blogs this week....

Design*Sponge posted her two best house tours ever: One in Brooklyn and one in France. Ooh la la.

Christian's fierce, fabulous and flawless response to the Saturday Night Live parody of him.

Camilla is cute. So is this little dude. Aww!

Schandenfreude photoshop disasters that will make you laugh.

These photos of real audiences get more and more hilarious as you look through them. The nuances are genius. (People afraid of public speaking, don't look!)

As far as design/craft icons go, bears are the new sparrow.

Polaroids from Paris. Enough said.

Have a wonderful weekend, my dears!

Guess who?

Clue #1: She is a major fashion power player these days.
Clue #2: She is way scarier than she looks.
The answer is in the comments...

Danish Newcomer: Pernille Engbirk

I'm loving the neutral colors and androgynous look of Danish designer Pernille Engbirk's collection. She's new on the scene, having graduated from The Danish School of Design in 2004. "I come from a family of architects," she says, "and am very much influenced by the straight lines and simplification in Danish classical architecture." Nicely done.

Tummy-Flattering Swimsuits

Alexei and I are going to Mexico in two weeks (yahoo!), so I have been bathing-suit shopping like a crazy person. (My shopping hiatus allows swimsuits, I have decided.) At this point, I could write a book on this season's bathing suits, so when my friend K. asked me to recommend suits to cover up a bit of a tummy, I jumped at the chance!

Here are my answers for tummy-flattering swimsuits:
Boden Boyleg Swimsuit.
Swimsuits from Toast.
One-piece swimsuits from J. Crew.
Victoria's Secret retro bikini.

And my two absolute favorites:
Princesse tam tam's "Audrey" suit, like a little black dress (above).
Princesse tam tam's "Escale" suit (above).

Marcel Dzama

Just a note to any New-York-based readers: Go see Marcel Dzama's spooky drawings and dioramas at the David Zwirner gallery in Chelsea. They feel like fairy-tales gone wrong, with 1940's women, hangings, naked people and trees with heads. ("When you're alone in the woods, you always see faces,'' the Canadian artist has said.) Go to the exhibit; you will love, I promise.
(P.S. Here and here are interviews with Dzama if you're in a reading mood.)
