DOCUMENTARY DAYS

DOCUMENTARY DAYS

THE DUST BOWL (PBS) Another landmark, epic doc from Ken Burns, this time focusing on the worst man-made ecological disaster in U.S. history when a frenzied wheat boom on the southern Plains, followed by a decade-long drought during the 1930s, nearly swept away the breadbasket of the nation. Undoubtedly the darkest chapter of the Great Depression, Burns does his usual exemplary job of combining archival footage, photos, dramatic re-enactments and voice-over narration from some of America’s best actors (Peter Coyote, Patricia Clarkson) to create a searing document of struggle, survival and redemption. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes; Deleted scenes; Additional interviews. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
History Channel/New Video release DISASTERS RECONSTRUCTED, which painstakingly recounts some of the worst accidents, mishaps and tragedies in recent history, including the explosion of the dirigible The Hindenburg, the sinking of the Titanic, and engineering disasters involving dams, buildings and vehicles. 6-disc set. HISTORY IN 3D offers three blu-ray programs in 3D: WWII IN 3D, loaded with color and B&W archival footage, most never before seen, of the 20th century’s greatest conflict, TITANIC: 100 YEARS IN 3D, looking at the doomed ship’s final resting place with remarkable underwater footage, and HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN TWO HOURS IN 3D, offers a CGI-enhanced look at the world’s origins, offering a rapid-fire view of 14 billion years of evolution. 3-disc set. THE UNIVERSE IN 3D reconstructs the violent natural events that brought the universe, as we know it today, into being. Eye-popping CGI effects enhance this fascinating program, even more so in 3D. All are widescreen, Dolby 5.1 surround.
CELEBRITY TRIALS IN THE MEDIA (MVD) Director Brian Malone takes a look at some of the more sensational tabloid and legitimate news stories that have filled the headlines and the Internet in recent years, including the Kobe Bryant rape case, O.J. Simpson’s multitude of legal issues, the child molestation trial of Michael Jackson, and more. Informative and objective study, refreshingly free of sensationalism. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
HIGH GROUND (Virgil Films) Terrific blend of action movie and documentary chronicles eleven wounded U.S. veterans who join an expedition to climb the 20,000 foot Himalayan giant Mount Lobuche, led by a blind adventurer named Erik Weihenmayer! Truly remarkable film and story of the indelible human spirit. Bonuses: Trailer; Commentary by Weihenmayer; Deleted scenes; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
NAZI COLLABORATORS (Shanachie) 13-part documentary looks at the reasons why so many Europeans and Middle Easterners collaborated with Hitler and the Nazis after their countries were invaded by the German war machine. Culled from over 4000 hours of archival footage, this massive doc takes painstaking care to present objective viewpoints of all involved. Fascinating and highly unsettling—as it could easily happen again. 4-disc set. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
THE ROLLING STONES UNDER REVIEW: THE RONNIE WOOD YEARS, 1975-1983 (Part 1). (Sexy Intellectual) Interesting look at the tenure of Ronnie Wood, former guitarist for the legendary sixties band The Faces, as a member of the Rolling Stones, and how his unique brand of guitar playing and singular persona helped The Stones redefine themselves during a period when many feel they were growing stale. Loaded with archival footage and interviews, a must for any Stones fan. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.
MINDS IN THE WATER (EOE) Terrific doc about pro surfer Dave “Rasta” Rastovich and his international journey to help save whales, dolphins and their ocean environment. Five years in the making, the film offers amazing surf footage of Rastovich as well as remarkable footage of marine life in its natural habitat. Inspiring and thrilling. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 surround.

FOR THE YOUNG ‘UNS

BRAVE (Disney/Pixar) Another animated extravaganza from the Pixar team that’s sure to become a classic. Merida, a Scottish princess whose interests include archery and horse riding, is told by her mother that her interests are not what a princess should be doing and that she has to marry. But Merida chooses to defy her mother. And when she and her mother have an argument Merida rides off and meets a witch. She asks for a spell to change her mother. And the witch gives her a cake which she gives to her mother but the change is not what she was hoping for. So she tries to find a way to fix it. Terrific CGI animation, loaded with knowing humor and pathos that’s sure to appeal to kids and adults, alike. Voice work from Kelly MacDonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson, and Robbie Coltrane adds to the greatness. Available in Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy combo pack. Bonuses: Featurettes; Shorts; Alternate opening; Art gallery; Promotional pieces; Extended scenes; Commentary by cast and crew. Widescreen. DTS-HD 7.1 surround, Dolby 5.1 surround.
PIXAR SHORT FILMS COLLECTION 2 (Disney/Pixar) More inventive genius from the Pixar crew, this time featuring 12 animated shorts, including multiple Oscar nominees (“Presto,” “Day and Night,” “La Luna”) and a host of family favorites. As an added bonus, this 2-disc collection features all the student short films of Pixar bosses John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Doctor. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Bonuses: Featurettes; Commentary by filmmakers. Widescreen. DTS-HD 7.1 and Dolby 5.1 surround.
THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL: 20th ANNIVERSARY (Disney) Charles Dickens gets the Jim Henson treatment, or is it the other way around? The Muppets assume the roles in Dickens’ classic tale of a miserly lout (Michael Caine) who is visited by a group of ghostly apparitions one Christmas Eve who force him to take stock of his life’s choices. Lots of clever bits and creative reimagining of the original text and story abound, leaving little wonder why this holiday classic has endured for two decades. Caine makes a wonderful human contribution to the cast, as does ‘70s icon Paul Williams with his soundtrack. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. Bonuses: Commentary by the Muppets and director Brian Henson; Featurettes. Widescreen. DTS-HD and Dolby 5.1 surround.
Shout Factory releases TRANSFORMERS PRIME: SEASON TWO, featuring all 26 episodes of the series’ sophomore season, courtesy scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, whose skills raise the proceedings up several notches. ASTONISHING X-MEN marks a collaboration between the creative minds of Joss Whedon and artist John Cassaday, featuring four X-Men adventures: “Gifted,” “Dangerous,” “Torn,” and “Unstoppable.” Loaded with knowing humor and loads of imaginative action. Both discs are available on Blu-ray, and look terrific. Bonuses: Interviews with the makers; Featurettes; Music video. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
DRAGONS: RIDERS OF BERK (DreamWorks) TV spin-off of the hit “How to Train Your Dragon” is still great fun, featuring the epic story of Hiccup, Toothless and his fearless friends continues with four fun and exciting new episodes of adventures. Bonuses: Featurettes; Collectible trading cards. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
KAIJUDO: RISE OF THE DUEL MASTERS (Shout Factory) Four episodes of the hit animated series featuring the adventures of teen hero Ray, who has been recruited by the mysterious Duel Masters to study Kiajudo—an ancient martial art. Although it’s an extended form of product placement by co-producer Hasbro (who produce the best-selling Duel Masters card game), the shows are imaginatively designed and executed. Bonuses: Featurettes; Trading card. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
ADVENTURES OF BAILEY: CHRISTMAS HERO (eOne) Bailey the Labrador find himself worried that he won’t get any presents from Santa this year until he learns of a mysterious Native American brave who can make his holiday wishes come true. Loaded with adorable animals who take on human voices, sure to please both the little ones and adults with a soft spot for our furry friends. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 mono.
ROBOT: MY FIRST COLLECTION VOL. 4 (Scholastic) Another “read-along” title featuring 12 award-winning stories on 3 DVDs, brought to life through animation and voice work from the likes of Zach Braff and many more. The three volumes are “Robot Zot!...and Many More Rhyming Stories,” “Too Many Toys…and More Stories About Problem Solving,” and “The Curious Garden…and More Stories About Nature.” Bonuses: Interviews with stories’ authors and illustrators; Read-along. Full screen. Dolby 2.0 mono.

New documentary

Have you heard of the new documentary Stories We Tell, by Oscar-nominated director Sarah Polley? She interviews her relatives about her late mother's affair—in fact, Sarah might not be her father's daughter—and found that everyone has different perspectives and anecdotes. She's interested in how the truth depends on who's telling the story. Critics have called the film "riveting," "genius," "remarkable," "a triumph" and "extraordinary in every way." It opens tomorrow at the Angelika and Lincoln Center Plaza.
Will you see it? Also, have you seen Polley's romantic movie Away from Her? It was heartbreaking and so, so beautiful.

Gendered book covers

Author Maureen Johnson kept hearing from male readers asking for less "girly" covers on her books, so that they could read them in public. She, too, had been frustrated by how books written by women so often got cheesy covers that made them seem less literary and of lower quality. So, she issued a challenge on Twitter: She asked people to choose a well-known book and imagine that the author was of the opposite gender. "There were hundreds of replies within 24 hours," she said. Take a look...Read More >

Babymoon trip for the older child

This Friday, Alex, Toby and I are taking a much-anticipated trip to San Francisco! We'll be visiting my sister for a week, and we're thinking of it as a babymoon trip for Toby. Since his world will be turned upside down when the baby arrives this summer, we decided to front-load all our vacations this year and take one last trip as a family of three, during which we'll dote on him, have tons of mommy-daddy-Toby time, and do everything he loves most: planes, trains, playgrounds, a million tacos for lunch:)

I'd love to ask: Do you have any family-friendly advice for San Francisco? Any yummy restaurants, ice-cream shops, playgrounds, museums, toy stores, or overall kid-friendly activities? We want to make it really special for Toby and would be grateful for any insider tips. Thank you so much!
P.S. Toby's first trip to San Francisco, and grown-up San Francisco advice.

What have you learned from your mom?

Mother's Day is two weeks away, so I'd love to ask: What has your mom taught you?

Here are ten things I've learned from my mom:
* Always be on time when picking someone up at the airport; it means a lot to people.
* There's something life affirming about a gin & tonic before dinner.
* If someone has cooked a meal, wait until they start eating before you take your first bite.
* Clear nail polish looks surprisingly beautiful.
* If people are rude to you, it's usually because they're having a bad day, so be empathetic and don't take things personally.
* Sprinkle sea salt on top of cookies before baking them in the oven.
* Nothing is better than reading a really good book, except maybe having your hair played with when you're falling asleep.
* Talk to kids like they're adults. They're smart and will love it.
* Everyone is secretly a big nerd.
* You're never alone.

A supporter of Cup of Jo and of all things love, the fragrance Coach Love, a warm woody floral, has re-launched their beautiful Facebook app to celebrate moms this Mother's Day. You can share what you love about your mom, along with a photo. It's a sweet way to recognize moms together. Post yours on Facebook, if you'd like.

So, I'm curious: What has your mom taught you? How to choose a lipstick? How to roast a chicken? How to ask for a raise? How to be a kind person? I'd love to hear their words of wisdom...

Seven month belly shot

Alex snapped a few belly shots last night. I'm 31 weeks, which means I'm about 7 months along. The baby has started to lurch around in my belly, I'm starting to feel enormous, and we've been washing teeny onesies in preparation. We're getting close! One surprising thing is that the baby feels so heavy, which is apparently normal for second pregnancies. But if I walk more than three blocks, I have to lug my belly up with both hands. My friend jokes that it's like carrying a bag of groceries, which sadly rings true:)

Have you seen the tumblr The Pregnant Husband? Made me laugh out loud a million times.

Hope you had a great weekend. xoxo

P.S. Great book for mothers-to-be, and a pregnancy survival guide.

What are you up to this weekend? My dad is coming to visit, and Toby is super excited to show off his violin. (He's been practicing:) Tomorrow I'm also volunteering at a city school, whose arts program has been completely cut, to talk to kids about blogging as a career. We're doing a craft project, where they'll cut out magazine photos and quotes to create their own "blog" on paper. Looking forward to it. Weekly Challenge #6

Have you ever meditated? I recently hung out with a new friend, Louise, who grew up in a Iowa town known for transcendental meditation. At just five years old, she was taught to meditate by repeating a mantra while she played with toys. At her high school, all the students would meditate for three hours a day. Amazing, right?

I've never been able to meditate. Funnily enough, I think it's because I'm too anxious. Alex and I once went to an evening meditation workshop for a story he was working on, and the whole time I sat there trying to figure out where we should go to dinner afterward. I'm pretty sure that wasn't the point.

But meditation can actually make you happier. According to a fascinating New York Times article, researchers have shown that daily meditation-like thought can shift brain activity toward "positive emotional states...that make us more likely to engage the world rather than to withdraw from it." In the study, participants were told to "relax with their eyes closed, focus on their breathing, and acknowledge and release any random thoughts that might arise," and voila! With as little as five minutes of meditating a day, "a happier outlook is yours for the taking."

So! Who wants to give it a go? This week's challenge is to meditate for 10 minutes a day. Because if it really makes you calmer and happier, then 10 minutes would be worth it, right?

Andy Puddicombe, author of Get Some Headspace: How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life in Ten Minutes a Day, says it's best to meditate first thing in the morning, if possible, and in the same place every time. "Avoid judging your meditation," he told the Huffington Post. "It is tempting to think you are 'good' or 'bad' at meditation. In truth, there is no such thing...Taming the mind is a skill to develop over a lifetime."

What do you think? Have you ever meditated? Did you feel good afterward? Would you be up for trying it?

P.S. Are you too busy? Also, cat bounce.

Date night tattoos

Tattly's temporary tattoos would be cute to wear on a date.

Also, have you heard Obama's brilliant parenting move? "Michelle and I have used this strategy when it comes to things like tattoos," he told the Today show. "What we've said to the girls is, if you guys ever decide you're going to get a tattoo, then Mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo, in the same place, and we'll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo." Zing! Made me laugh.

Success

This success chart by Demetri Martin rings so true. Everyone seems to face unexpected obstacles and detours in their career path—those it's-always-darkest-before-the-dawn moments.

A few fun facts from a slideshow of 26 people who failed at first:
* Dr. Seuss's first book was rejected by 27 different publishers.
* Thomas Edison's teachers told him he was "too stupid to learn anything."
* Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because he "had no good ideas."
* The first time Jerry Seinfeld went onstage, he was booed away by a jeering crowd.
* Oprah Winfrey was fired from her television reporting job because they told her she wasn't fit to be on screen.

What were your WTF moments on your path to success? Alex dropped out of college for a semester and lived with his parents. I went to law school for a year and was a mess. Elvis was initially a truck driver! It always feels like the end of the world when it's happening, but next time, just picture this chart:)

The Best Pizza You'll Ever Have

What's your favorite pizza place in NYC? After living here for eleven years, I can definitely say that the best pizza I've had is at Co. in Chelsea. Have you ever been there? Co.'s owner, Jim Lahey, is a bread-making genius ("the man can do wonders with flour and water," says the New York Times); since New York pizza is known for its thin crust, the danger is that it can taste as dry as cardboard, but Lahey has a way of making his pizzas pillowy and chewy in just the right way. He also adds bold toppings—like, sauerkraut, arugula, leeks, pecorino—that elevate his pizzas from kids-birthday-party catering to grown-up fare. Here's a recipe that will blow your mind...

Bike clothes

My beloved bike was stolen yesterday, so I'm in the market for a new one. (Curses, NYC! It will be the sixth bike I've had since I moved here, crazily enough.) But on a happier note, how awesome are these bike clothes by a Seattle designer? This skirt, for example, unzips in the back to reveal 12" of additional fabric for easy pedaling. The fabric is stretchy, and the skirt has a higher waist for coverage while leaning forward. Genius.

Sleeping tricks

Last night, I had a hard time sleeping. I kept waking up in the middle of the night obsessing about random things (my specialty). Even my pregnancy pillow didn't help.

My dad, who is a champion sleeper, once taught me a great trick: Pretend that you’re going to fall through the bed. It makes you realize how tensed up your body is and helps you relax. Counting sheep is also helpful, although weirdly I never know where the sheep are supposed to go once they've jumped over the fence. I sometimes make them circle back, so it's just one or two exhausted sheep running around the whole time. Apartment Therapy also found the most relaxing song ever, which actually slows down your heartbeat.

Are you a good sleeper? Any tips?

P.S. Encouragement.

Parody: Men are less beautiful than they think.

By now, I'm sure everyone has seen the viral Dove beauty campaign showing that women are more beautiful than they think. In the three-minute ad, a forensic scientist draws women twice—once from their own description and once from someone else's description. By comparing the two photos, the women can see that they're overly critical of their looks and prettier than they realize.

Well, this parody video—about how men are less beautiful than they think—made me laugh out loud.

Toby and the violin

Recently Toby became randomly obsessed with violins. Alex and I were trying to figure out where this new fascination came from. A street musician? A Dora the Explorer episode? Thin air? However it started, Toby's love of the violin is a real thing. He draws pictures of violins. He pretends that his books are violins and holds them up to his neck. Every evening, instead of watching a kids TV show, he asks for bluegrass videos on YouTube. (Annie is his favorite.)

Last week, Alex suggested we find him a miniature used violin on eBay. At first I thought it sounded crazy and extravagant (he's only two!), but Alex really thought it was worth it. So we ordered this teeny violin (it's 1/8th size), and Toby was psychotically excited about the impending arrival ("The brown package here yet, Mama?" "You think today the violin comes, Mama?" "We open it with scissors, Mama?") until it arrived this past Friday. Honestly, I have been amazed by how much Toby has played with it, and he even insists on carrying it with him in the stroller and gently cuddling it while we read bedtime stories.

Anyway, it has been such a fascinating turn-of-events. Maybe when he's a bit older, if he's still interested, we could sign him up for some lessons.
The giddy moment we realized that the case could double as a backpack!

Do your kiddos play any instruments? (Do you?) I wish I did!

P.S. The magic of Central Park and a lullaby that actually works.
